What started innocently enough as a gift to her grandkids, soon became a business venture that has grown by leaps and bounds and stitches. Mummi Quilts, located in Hastings, Ontario, was born a few years ago by owner, Eeva (a.k.a. Mummi) and has been a joy to her ever since, she says.
“Mummi Quilts began two and a half years ago after I made baby quilts with photo transfers for my grandchildren,” she says. “Then friends and relatives ordered one, then there was a request for a diaper bag and the rest is history.”
Seeing as the first quilts were made with love for her grandchildren, ages 5, 3 ½, and 6 months, it was only natural that she name the business using the Finnish name for grandmother, Mummi. Eeva’s grandchildren are her inspiration for the items created and they are always willing to test out the beautiful products before they are created for sale on her website, http://www.mummiquilts.com. Eeva says that her daughter also provides very valuable tips and advice on practical everyday items for babies.
Mummi Quilts offers a wide variety of items from the photo transfer quilts and security blankets to shopping cart covers, various bags, and bibs. One of Eeva’s favourite products to make is the Mummi Memory Bear, she says.
“My latest item, the Mummi Memory Bear, is a lot of fun to create from old baby clothes. Customers can send me their favourite pieces and I will make a one-of-a-kind Mummi Memory Bear for their little one to cuddle with,” she says.
Eeva makes quilts of different sizes from the baby quilt (27” x 38”) up to a quilt that will fit a double bed. Generally, the larger the quilt, the more difficult it can be to sew, she says. Eeva has sewn for over 40 years but only took an interest in quilting a few years ago, she says. She says the one thing that has changed drastically over the years is the technology in sewing machines.
“I have the most amazing sewing machine now! It is almost sophisticated enough to make my morning coffee!” she states.
Eeva loves owning her own business and treasures the freedom that Mummi Quilts gives her, she says.
“You can have an amazing Memory Quilt or theme quilt made from almost anything. Not many people think of a quilt as a gift for any occasion. Having my own business means that I do not have to answer to anyone. As long as my customers are happy, then that‘s all that matters,” says Eeva. “I love what I am doing. It is a joy to work with beautiful fabrics and create items that my customers will appreciate for years to come.”
